  • Hex on location in Newport for International Surfing Day

Today was International Surfing Day, and, although the waves were small that didn't stop us from heading down to Newport Beach for a good ol' fashioned kickback with the boys. Whether you are an experienced surfer, avid beach goer or landlocked web monkey who hates the sand, today was a day that afforded one the opportunity to hang with friends and truly take a minute to be thankful for the ocean or any aspect of Mother Nature which you thoroughly enjoy. There was literally no right or wrong place to be just so long as you were outside, we just happened to stumble upon a cool little party in Newport put on by our friends at Surfing Magazine. With tons of events going on up and down the California coast and across the globe, we are hesitant to claim that we were at the best spot to be, but we sure did have loads of fun. From squeezing in a surf, to participating in a beach cleanup to chilling porch-side and talking shop with friends, we can't wait for what International Surfing Day has in store for us next year. And who knows, with the amount of awesome feedback we received today Hex could very well have a sweet as can be Surf Team by then...

The beach was packed to say the least. Groms outta school = first real day of summer!

Surfrider was on hand for the beach cleanup.

...While Longboard Ale and Barefoot Wine provided cool refreshments...

Ricky Whitlock, Phillip Goold and myself about to help in the beach cleanup.

Stairway to heaven...back at the Surfing Mag house good times awaited.

    Our office for the day.

Meanwhile back on the beach these girls receive the good Samaritan award of the day for their extended cleanup efforts.

Parker Coffin showing off his special ISD artwork...that's whats up dog!

On the way out we bumped into Newport's finest, the ever so stylish Andrew Doheny walking his dog.

    See you all next year!

  • Hex hangin' in NYC at Air in the Square

Every year in New York on Broadway between 42nd and 43rd streets, the BMX and Skateboard worlds descend upon the famous Times Square for a contest unlike anything else. For one day, the two jumbo-trons that usually cast fledgling stock prices and current world events upon unsuspecting tourists from all over the US are turned off and re-wired to bring you the insane action that unfolds at the "Air in the Square" triples MegaRamp event. As 20 of the top BMX and Skateboard athletes from around the world duke it out for the curious, Midwest bystanders viewing pleasure one cannot help but become truly entranced at the spectacle that is the MegaRamp...and the few brave souls who give life and limb to hit it. This year, the action unfolded on a one-of-a-kind 195 foot long course, expanding across the entire city block, and featured a 25 foot high roll-in-ramp with two 25 foot wide jumps and a course ending 14 foot high quarter pipe.

The event kicked off with a head to head battle elimination style BMX competition. The BMX Riders competing included: Ryan Nyquist, Daniel Dhers, Mike Spinner, Brett Banasiewicz, Steve McCann, Zack Warden, Austin Coleman, Pat Casey, Vince Byron, James Foster, Colton Satterfield and Rob Darden. Colton Satterfield, the “Lucky Loser” from Salt Lake City, Utah, won the final spot in semi-final battle against Brett Banasiewicz. Satterfield proved to be victorious and won the final round of the BMX competition against competitor Pat Casey. Immediately following the BMX Competition was the skateboarding contest. The contest consisted of a 20 minute jam session, in which the skateboarders were given 20 minutes to showcase their best tricks on the MegaRamp. The skateboarders competing included: Bob Burnquist, Pierre-Luc Gagnon (PLG), Andy MacDonald, local Elliot Sloan, Adam Taylor Mitchie Brusco, Lincoln Ueda, Jett Eaton and Jagger Eaton. When the screams settled the pubic declared Mitchie Brusco from Kirkland, Washington the winner of the contest. So, there ya have it, with Brusco being one of the youngest competitors at just 14 years of age and winning the thing, the future of MegaRamp Skateboarding in undoubtedly heading in the right direction. Until next year...

  • Morgan Wade wins MegaRamp Championships series opener at Woodward West in Tehachapi

Last Thursday our boy Morgan Wade emerged victorious to claim top honors in the first event of 2011 MegaRamp Championship series held at Camp Woodward in Tehachapi. The day was hot and beautiful, winds were calm, and the campers were out in full force cheering on their favorite heroes as they slayed-thankfully there were no major injuries as the Ramp showed its face for the first time this year. You wouldn't believe what some of these guys were doing over both the 55 and 75ft gaps, then composing themselves again before hitting the 27ft quarter pipe...it was truly off the hinges. We hope you enjoy our photos and video and don't forget to keep tuning in throughout the year to keep up with Morgan as he continues to go all out at both the X-Games and Dew Tour!

  • Chillin' in DTLA with Far East Movement

Can I just say that Los Angeles has great food?  Especially on a day like today when HEX & Far East Movement met up in Little Tokyo for some bangin' Japanese cuisine.  The kids in DTLA couldn't get enough of these guys!  Last night saw the Far East Movement x Robert Vargas live mashup at Artwalk - complete with a live performance in the streets!  It's good to be in LA.
