  • The Grand Olympic: The Photography of Theo Ehret

Theo Ehret was the house photographer at the Los Angeles Olympic Auditorium in its heyday, and he captured many of the the great boxers and wrestlers of that time: including Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Andre the Giant, Mil Mascaras, and many of the emerging Latino fighters of his era. So, when our friends at 722 told us they were going to throw a gala in his honor we swooned at the opportunity to attend!

Ehret's classic film noir black and white images captured the gigantic characters and wild scene at one of the great fight venues in America. He chronicled the rise of Latino fighters from places like Mexico, Honduras, Panama and Nicaragua. And just as importantly, he covered the colorful scene in and around the Olympic: the Battle Royales, Cage Matches, celebrities, mariachis, luchadores, dwarves, heels, and passionate fans. We seriously could not have had more fun, and if you get a chance go and check it out-the exhibit runs through the end of the month...

  • "The Goblin Universe" At New Image Art gallery

We are excited to announce our latest exhibition, "The Goblin Universe" featuring the works of Matt Furie and Michelle Devereux. Matt Furie returns to New Image Art with a new cast of hyper colored phantoms, monster sluts, and other mythical creatures sure to melt your sci-fi loving hearts. This month New Image Art welcomes newcomer Michelle Devereux in her first West Coast exhibition. With her series titled "Dudes on Pizza" Devereux renders four of her pals surfing on pizza slices using colored pencil and airbrushed backgrounds with a perfectly 1980's appeal and technical precision alongside some of her other fantastical characters and scenes created for this show.

Matt Furie was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1979. He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. He currently lives in San Francisco. Matt Furie's drawings come from a mix of child-like enchantment and momentary adult situations. His self proclaimed "...children's book illustrations for adults" combines traditional and modern mark-making for his ripe, cartoon-inspired characters. He has been awarded best Visual Artist by the SF Bay Guardian in the 20th annual Goldie awards. Furie has exhibited in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, and abroad. Selected publications include Juxtapoz, Vice, The Believer, The Oxford American Journal, Swindle, and McSweeny's McMullens.

Michelle Devereux was born in Dallas, Texas in 1982. She graduated Bard College, NY with a BFA in Studio Art. She currently lives and works in Austin,Texas. She is a contributing artist for Austin based, multi-media label, Monofonus Press. She is also a member of a female-centric video collective called Austin Video Bee, a co-founder of a conceptual tap troupe known as What's Tappening?! and plays drums in a apocalypse inspired chick band called SSSSTORMSHELTERRRR. Her current body work is comprised of colored pencil drawings combined with airbrush that depict realistically rendered subjects in fantastic environments.
