  • HEX x SXSW 2013

Well, it's that time of the year again. The time when we migrate to Austin, Texas for what is possibly the dopest music festival in all of the USA-SXSW! We did it pretty big last year, and this year we have no intentions of slowing down one bit. We're involved with a Thursday afternoon daytime BBQ showcase put on by our friends at Innovative Leisure Records, and then on Saturday night we plan to get little to no sleep before we catch our flight out on Sunday at the Fool's Gold Austin showcase. Both parties are sure to be off the hinges so rsvp now while there's still time! Hope to see you out there...and if you can't make it, be sure to keep up with all of our antics on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter...

*Also, throughout the week be on the lookout for our official #SHEXSW hashtag on Twitter and Instagram (@ShopHex) where we will be sharing all of our golden moments and then some. Likewise, if you are going to be out at SXSW yourself we encourage you to use that hashtag when posting photos or updates from any of your favorite showcases, eateries, parties, venues, or just plain old Texas fun you're having! Then, on the following week of March 18th we will be selecting some lucky individuals whom truly embodied the #SHEXSW spirit and of course will be hooking them up with some serious HEX goodness...so...make sure to get in on the action and keep us updated with all the fun you're having as well!

  • HEX With Chris Lux + Augustus Thompson At New Image Art

On Friday, we cruised out to New Image Art Gallery to support the opening of the 2 man show we recently sponsored - "Chris Lux + Augustus Thompson." The two artist were a slight departure from the more "street" (used very loosely) art vibe of the last few New Image shows, toward a Modern Art selection.

The front half of the gallery featured work by Chris Lux. Lux's paintings definitely showed a cubist influence, and reminded me of early 20th century European murals, however there was a lot more going on.

Pieces were hung on top of other pieces and the frames were completely part of the art. Continue reading

  • HEX Presents Chris Lux + Augustus Thompson At New Image Art Gallery

New Image Art, Los Angeles in conjunction with HEX is pleased to announce the first joint exhibition of work by Chris Lux and Augustus Thompson. In this show, the artists celebrate their shared affinity for Modern art as the jumping off place for contemporary painting, sculpture, and constructions.

In new work, Chris Lux makes playful use of intent and influence, pushing his visual narratives to become objects which reference historical painting and sculpture. Decoration, ceramics, lighting, and resin engage more formal works on paper and canvas to create self-contained installations. The varieties and application of materials update Lux's two-dimensional work and create, he says, "a time where all bits of culture, from modern to prehistoric, wait at the same bus stop."

Augustus Thompson continues his work in watercolor with a series of portrait studies based on the figure awash in Aristide Maillol's, The River (1938-43). Each portrait creates a different fraction of time in the eternal, anguished movement of the Maillol sculpture. Constructions in plaster, canvas, and black plastic finish the series and flow from the original watercolor blocks to anchor the artifacts spatially within a river-like continuum.

Thompson has shown previously at New Image Art, and the works of both artists have been exhibited throughout the United States and Europe.
